I haven’t written anything in a while. Mainly because I didn’t have much to say. And honestly, there isn’t much I’ll be able to say here that hasn’t already been said by others. But shit, this guy changed my life so I wanted to say something.

OS X Automator – Combine Multiple Text Files into One

Here is an Automator workflow, service and application to combine several text files into one text file. I searched for hours trying to find something really simple and just decided to build it myself. Note: this only works with .txt files.

To use the it as a droplet, download this file:

1. Combine Text Files Zip
2. Unzip it.
3. Grab “TextComboDroplet”, you can put it anywhere on your system you like.
4. All you have to do is drag a folder containing text files you’d like to combine onto the TextComboDroplet.
5. It will output a file called “Combined Text Files.txt” to your Desktop.

To use it as a service, download this file:

1. Combine Text Files Zip
2. Unzip it.
3. Open Automator.
4. It will ask you if you which type of file you’d like to create. Select “Open Existing Workflow” in the bottom left-hand corner.
5. Select “Combine Text Files.workflow” from your downloads folder.
6. Click File > Save As… and hit enter.
7. Now, all you have to do is select two or more files from the finder and right click. At the bottom should be a “Combine Text Files” option.
8. Clicking this will output a file called “Combined Text Files.txt” to your Desktop.

To use it as a workflow, download this file:

1. Combine Text Files Zip
2. Unzip it.
3. Open “TextCombo.workflow”. It will launch Automator.
4. Click “Run” to run it or use it with Hazel or combine it with your own Automator actions.

In all this talk about Apple vs. Nameless Ugly Product #4459, it’s always about iOS vs. Android. Or iPad vs. Samsung Galaxy no one cares. Or Mac vs. PC. But there’s something missing in all these product vs. product battles.

No matter how great the new Samsung Galaxy Submarine 40S3 is, even if it matches the iPhone 4 in every possible way, Apple has gotten everything else better than you as well. Customer service at Apple is unparalleled in my experience. I can’t think of a better retail store. I actually pause my TiVO to watch their ads. They deliver the best they can at every stage of the chain.

To all the companies out there that are designing an iPad killer that’s basically an iPad but with more clutter from carriers, a less responsive screen and better notifications:

You’re not competing with the iPad. You’re competing with Apple’s attention to detail in customer service. You’re competing with the most successful retail stores that exist. You’re competing with AppleCare. And you’re competing with iTunes. I know it’s not perfect but it gets the job done for just about everyone.

And to all the Paul Thurrott’s out there, predicting Apples’ demise every time a new Droid comes out. Until your favorite [insert non-Apple company here] starts to care about these things a lot, I’ll sleep like a baby every night knowing that when the BlackPad comes out, they’ll be selling it at the Verizon store. I just read David’s post via Daring Fireball.

This is an article about how many lives and businesses have been ruined by Apple. And I’m not going to debate that. It’s not like the App Store is the most successful developer market place in the history of any platform or anything. But that’s not the point.

The point is that for every developer that is crying about Flash, there are several new companies excited as hell about iOS or HTML5 or whatever other awesome thing Apple is pushing. I’m a good example. I wouldn’t even be learning programming if it weren’t for my exposure to Apple’s products.

If monetary reward is the only way we’re going to judge anything, than just kick me in the balls now and call it a day.

Apple really is a big start-up. They do some risky stuff and they turn on a dime. When you’re as big as Apple, those decisions effect more people. They take the heat and they keep selling a ton of products. There must be something to this. They must be doing something right.

Well, I’m sad to say that my mac has been having some serious issues. It’s at the apple store for 48 hours and hopefully it’s just some faulty RAM because I can’t afford much more for repairs. So thanks to the other apple product I can’t live without and the wordpress app, I’m still able to blog.

This brings me to my list of tips for anyone experiencing kernal panic on your mac:

1. Do a hardware test. Find your original OSX install disc and pop it in. Then restart the computer and hold down the option key as it is booting up. You’ll see the hardware test as an option. Do it. The mac genius at the northridge Apple store said I should do an erase and install first as it’s usually software related. Sure but the hardware test takes 30 min and I don’t have to erase anything or reinstall a bunch of software and I’ll know if there’s something wrong with the hardware. And that’s way Bette than the guessing game I’ve been playing for the last 4 days.

2. The mac genius first line of defense is: erase and install first, ask questions later. So if your hardware test came out ok, you should just back up everything and do an erase and install of OSX. The Apple Store charges $99 to do it and there’s no point in bringing in if you’re not ready to erase the drive.

And 3. After all this, if it is still kernal panicing and your hair is as white as mine, the apple genius will run a diagnostic that can last three days. And you should hope to god that your warranty is still good. Because if it’s anything but faulty RAM, you could be looking at a good $600 at least to fix it. If you’re still protected with AppleCare than everything should work out okay.
